The rear wheel is more or less done! I bought some white 2 1/2 inch ribbon to use as rim liner/strip so that the tube does not run against anything sharp on the rim. After installing the ribbon, I installed the tire and tube and then pumped and pumped and pumped air into the tire...with a big volume tube/tire combo, it takes a while to build up the pressure.
I inflated the tire to around 30 PSI in order to seat the tire on the rim and get it to take shape. It will probably sit in that higher PSI for a couple of days and then will be adjusted to the 7-10 PSI it will run at.
Pix of the beast for the rear:
Cd for scale....
close up of the drilled out rim and ribbon used as rim liner:
In some ways this juicy beast looks a little like a motocross tire, but without he big nobbies...the tire choice for the front will be a little more aggressive and will look a little 'knobbier' though.

Dude, you're killing me. I fall asleep at night with two equally unobtainable options lurking in the inner stratosphere of my subconscious; a shimmering, sleek custom CX frame & and a stalwart snow bike. (Nice slippers in that last pic, by the way!) I raced up at Togwotee Pass last year on a borrowed bike and had a B.L.A.S.T. Seriously, hard as hell, really fun, with one decidedly white-knuckle descent. Add wolf tracks all over the trail, and you have a very memorable experience. So, keep the Togwotee races in mind, I'll let you know when dates are posted. Great looking bike, enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteThe Togwotee Winter Classic will be March 3rd, 2012. We also have a new snow bike race at Targhee on Jan 15th this year. AND, we are doing an unsupported ride/race called West-N-Back that will leave from Warm River Campground on Jan 21 with options to stop in West Yellowstone or turn around and ride back. 50 or 100 miles. Bam!
heading back home - have been in Phoenix all week with very limited internet access. It seems surreal to be talking snowbikes when it is 75 degrees outside here. What are you looking at for bikes?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the beta! It is going to be a whole new genre to figure out - should be a ton of fun - and way way better than the idea of sitting on a trainer! yeehaa! and ummm, that must have been the wife taking the pix with those slippers....yeah, that's the ticket. It seems like the prospects of running into grizz in the winter is much slimmer than in the summer in the W Jelly area....thanks for planting the seed, will definitely stay tuned for what you guys have brewing there. I am not so sure I will have the fitness for the hundie but the fiddy definitely has the mind noodling....Hope all is well.
